Without any experience in the shoe industry, Knight set up a company called Blue Ribbon Sports, and began importing and selling Onitsuka Tiger sneakers out of his garage in Oregon. Initially, Knight struggled to make sales, but he persisted, traveling to track meets and other sporting events to promote his brand.
In 1971, Blue Ribbon Sports rebranded itself as Nike, and introduced its own line of shoes. The company's first shoe, the Nike Cortez, quickly became a hit, and Nike soon became one of the most popular brands in the athletic shoe industry.
Knight's success with Nike is a testament to the power of curiosity, determination and perseverance. Despite his lack of expertise in the shoe industry, Knight was able to build a global brand by focusing on quality, innovation, and a relentless drive to succeed.
